Community Partnership in Action

Community Partnership in Action
Betsy Johnson

Students in the woodshop at Springfield High School, led by instructor Scott Touchette, are turning hands-on learning into real community impact.

Through the Team Oregon Build project, students have supported the Sheds of Hope initiative, built storage solutions for the district, and completed projects for St. Vincent de Paul.

This semester, students are constructing fire-resistant storage sheds for families impacted by the Holiday Farm Fire. These projects help families rebuild while giving students meaningful, real-world experience.

Thanks to partnerships with Lane Education Service District, PIVOT Architecture, and grant funding from the Oregon Department of Human Services Office of Resilience and Emergency Management, the woodshop now features a new floor-to-ceiling automatic door. The upgrade allows students to move large projects safely and work more efficiently — rain or shine.

Recently, community partners visited the woodshop to see the work in progress and hear from students directly.

We’re grateful for the partnerships that help make opportunities like this possible and proud of the way our students are building skills — and supporting their community.
